Common Shipping Mistakes and How to Avoid Them - Part 3

In Part 1, we looked at problems related to costly packing; in Part 2, we looked at some particular but easily avoidable packing problems; in Part 3, we wrap up this series by looking at mistakes that can delay the delivery of your shipment, and cost you thousands of dollars, or even jail time or deportation.

1. Missing or incomplete documents

Various forms and documents are required to allow your shipment to be processed smoothly at its destination port. While some documents can be provided before your departure, others may need to be submitted after landing.

We understand paperwork is often the last thing you want to think about, but it’s important you attend to all of your paperwork in a timely fashion to avoid unnecessary delays to your shipment. Make a list of everything you will need to finalize once you have arrived and make it a priority to attend to those items as soon as possible.

2. Shipping banned or restricted items

You must be dreaming of exploring your new city and how you’ll add your personal touches to your new home. Do you see yourself zipping around on your fancy electric bike or scooter? Do you have a shelf of prized ornaments and decorations that you can picture in your mind in your new home?

It’s imperative to be aware that some items in your home country might be restricted where you’re moving. Some can be illegal to export from your current home country; some might be allowed to be shipped but unable to be used. Pay extra attention to medicine as it might be illegal in your destination country. Be sure to do your homework in checking restricted and banned items and get necessary approvals when necessary.

3. Skipping insurance

What happens if you skip insurance when the vessel carrying your shipment sinks, or wild weather or mishandling leads to items being damaged, or all or part of your shipment gets lost?

Containers have also been known sometimes to roll off a ship, or rough conditions might result in damage to your belongings. With many opportunities to damage or lose your belongings, you won’t want to risk skipping insurance. When you are covered by insurance, in the event of loss or damage, be sure to report in writing within the timeframe given for making claims to ensure your claim is not rejected for being late.
